I'm using the 'USA' layout with the 'Default' variant. After installing vnc, I updated the startup scripts to start gnome-session &. I'm using MATE. Same message appears on first login. I really don't want to run my server with runlevel 5, and having to login to the account on the console to avoid this problem seems like a pain. This message also pops up when I edit keyboard layout settings in Cinnamon Settings or dconf Editor. Probably internal X server problem. I have now found the | which is on Shift \ which is a normal combination on laptops.
