If that is a source of frustration, you can play around with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, as Motorhead Kaze suggests. For example, setxkbmap -layout us -model macbook79 -variant intl -print | xkbcomp - :0 shows an error which says what the problem is about. So, I did a lot of fixing...somewhere in there, my keyboard got switched from Japanese to an American one, and that is not good for me at all.
